Rights and Privileges

When I was learning to drive, my father made it a point of reminding me (and anyone else around) that driving was a privilege, not a right.  What are rights?  What rights do you have?  Who granted those rights?

Contrary to the Declaration of Independence, I do not believe that we have any God given rights.  All rights are those afforded by man, be they an official government or the guy with the biggest stick.

Think about that for a moment.  You have no rights…

Yet we are so fast to claim our rights.  “I should not be treated this way!” “I deserve better than this.” “I should have this.”  You have a right to nothing, not even your own life.

Depressed yet?  Well, there is one right that we can be granted.

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:12-13

Are you willing to give up all of your “perceived” rights for something much greater?   What it really means to be a child of God is a subject for another time.
