It is not about what I do, by why I do it.
Why are you making the decisions you are making? Each and every decision is based on priorities.
And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. – Mark 12:30
Why are you doing it?
Is everything you do motivated by your love for God? Is all your life, everything you have, committed to Him?
What are you doing right now? Is that in line with loving God with all that is in you?
I do not actually know how many times I have linked to Matt 6:33, but it applies here as well. I feel like I am being beat like a drum, so if I sound like one, the same tone over and over, you know why.
I wrote the above in February of 2009. I had been sitting on it. Yesterday I was asked to share at chai time because the pastor had to get finger printed at immigration. Below are my notes that came mostly from this post.
The “Why” that lies beneath
The “what” is not important, the “why” is. Why are you doing what you do?
Position means little by itself. Velocity is not the whole picture. Acceleration gives you more. But you can even measure the change in acceleration.
1 Sam 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
God is not concerned with how you look. That includes what you do. He is concerned with why you look the way you do. What motivates you? Why do you do the things you do?
That law is an attempt to control what we do, from the outside. But that is insufficient. You cannot stop a train with a ribbon. You much change the forces acting upon it.
Matt 5:21-22 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.
Matt 5:27-28 You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
What is in your heart? Why are you doing it? In the end, when you stand before the throne of God, the what will be meaningless, only the why will matter.
Matt 6:1 “Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.
Matt 6:5 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
Matt 6:16 “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
Pleasing men is not the heart God would have in us. That is not the life He wants us to live.
There is a hymn by Frederick Brook that begins:
My goal is God Himself, not joy, nor peace,
Nor even blessing, but Himself, my God;
What is your goal?
Matt 25:21 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’
